A common problem shared by companies who are operating their businesses online is whether they should get a dedicated server to host their websites.

But before switching to a dedicated server, it should be noted that there are two types of dedicated servers: managed and unmanaged.

managed & unmanaged dedicated server

In order to understand web hosting products, you first need to be familiar what a dedicated server is. This can help you determine if a managed or unmanaged dedicated server fits your business needs.

In brief, a dedicated server functions as a single physical server where you store data. It comprises a processor, Random Access Memory (RAM), storage space, and extra bandwidth options (depending on your web host provider). This type of web hosting is only for your own use, meaning you will not have to share your resources. If you are a business that needs to accommodate high website traffic, scripts, and even games, getting a dedicated server is a good idea.

Now, let us differentiate between a managed and unmanaged dedicated server.

What is a managed dedicated server?

With a managed dedicated server, as the name implies, your web host provider will do all the work for you such as perform functions like feature installations and upgrades. When a problem arises, the host provider will only be a call away. Your provider will offer you specifications for your dedicated servers such as the type of processor and storage, memory size, and bandwidth that is customizable according to your needs.

Get a managed dedicated server if:

  • You have the budget – dedicated servers are available within a pricey range.

  • You are not confident about your tech skills or you have a limited IT department.

  • You choose to outsource your IT infrastructure management.

  • You would rather focus on other critical business matters without having to add server maintenance on your to-do list.

What is an unmanaged dedicated server?

An unmanaged dedicated server is the complete opposite of a managed dedicated server. Unmanaged dedicated servers are cheaper where your hosting provider will install everything and leave the maintenance to you. Although you have key access to your server and have the liberty to configure, when you are faced with issues such as reconfigurations and upgrades, your provider will not be there to assist you. If you decide to call on IT support from your provider, you may need to pay fees.

Get an unmanaged dedicated server if:

  • You do not have the budget to avail a fully managed hosting plan.

  • You have the technical expertise or you have an IT department that is experienced in server management.

  • You have the time for server maintenance and like the idea of having the freedom for configurations.

Before settling on which dedicated server type is right for your business, take the time to evaluate your needs first. Does your business needs more security and support when it comes to server administration? Are you looking for affordable dedicated servers? Do you have the IT personnel to help you maintain your server? Do you see yourself as tech-savvy enough to take on an unmanaged plan by yourself?

Once you understand the basics and address your business needs, it will be the right time to consider a dedicated server.
